Booking safely with a small marketplace
Independent does not mean risky — but the checks are different from the ones you are used to.
The reassurance a large platform sells you is mostly financial: a refund process and a call centre. A small marketplace offers something else — a named human who answers — and a few habits make that just as safe.
Pay by card, on the site
Card payments carry chargeback rights that bank transfers do not. Most reputable small marketplaces use a mainstream payment processor; if the only option is a transfer to a personal account, slow down.
Get the terms in writing, in one message
Dates, inclusions, meeting point, cancellation window. Small operators are informal by nature and happy to confirm — you just have to ask once.
Insure the trip, not the booking
For remote or weather-dependent travel, travel insurance covering cancellation and evacuation matters far more than the platform's refund policy.
Read the reviews on the operator, not the platform
A young marketplace may have few reviews while the operators on it have a decade of them elsewhere. Search the operator's own name.
