Where your money actually goes
Two identical-looking bookings can leave completely different amounts of money in the place you visited.
Travel money leaks at every handover. A trip booked through a large intermediary can pass through a marketing affiliate, an aggregator, a local agent and only then reach the guide standing in front of you — each layer taking a cut for work you did not ask for.
Ask who holds the inventory
If a site sells beds or seats it does not control, someone else is between you and the host. Community-run marketplaces and operator-owned platforms cut that chain to one link, which is why their prices can be both fairer to you and better for the host.
Local ownership changes what gets built
When earnings stay in the community, they show up as boat maintenance, guide training and school fees rather than as dividends. Several of the marketplaces in this directory publish their revenue split for exactly this reason.
Off-season matters more than price
The most useful thing you can do for a small operator is book outside peak weeks. Shoulder-season bookings smooth income for a business that cannot borrow against a busy August.
